Teaching at Ruili IAHS
The atmosphere at Ruili IAHS is very welcoming and open. We have very small class sizes, and plan on never having a graduating class of more than 20.
The school's classes are oriented toward that of a public high school in the USA. We use Global Academic Certificate (GAC) course materials in addition to normal books used in the USA to round out our students' academic experiences.
The school currently offers Sophomore and Junior year high school classes, where students will complete their GAC certificates and take their ACT and GED tests. After this, they move to our Kunming campus to complete their senior year of school (mostly made of AP classes) before heading to the USA for college.
Our motto, "We prepare you for college!" encompasses what our goal is for students: to make sure they feel they can be successful in an academic environment. They practice academic essay writing, presentations, and many other skills useful once they arrive in the USA. In addition, being taught by foreign teachers allows them to begin to experience learning in an environment similar to the USA. The material we use is meant to closely follow the common core state standards (CCSS) created for US schools, and teaches them useful vocabulary.
The students here are friendly and hardworking. From our first class, students' scores on their ACT tests ranged between 19 and 29, and all of them were accepted by schools in the USA. Teachers and students mantain friendly relationships, and often do some activities together outside of class.
Chinese staff here in Ruili are also very helpful. If there is a problem, they will try their best to find a solution. They also aid the teachers in staying in contact with Ruili High School, and teachers participate in several activities with the larger high school every week.
This is a great place to improve teaching skills in a positive environment. The small class sizes mean that preparation is important, but there is less homework to grade. Structured lessons exist for GAC assessments, and HSC courses have materials and room for experimentation with new ideas and techniques.
